Facebook Chat Update : Control Who Sees You Online via Friend Lists

Facebook pushed some updates to its chat system. People can now go stealth mode and hide their online status from some friends, while staying online for the others.

You can now categorize your friends into different lists, like family, colleagues etc and set the availability setting for each list. Once you create a list, you can either drag and drop contacts into it or if they are offline at that time, you can manually click the edit link and add users one by one.

When you appear offline for a particular list, the contacts in that list can’t see your online status and neither can you see if they are online or not. The stealth mode can’t be applied to particular users but you’ll have to create a list of contacts for appearing offline to them.

"With Wave 3 of Windows Live Messenger, Microsoft introduced a new feature – Photo Sharing. This feature, when an image file is dropped into an active conversation window, starts a sharing activity allowing you to share photos with family and friends. Fun right?

The feature sucks though, because…

* It’s not clear the person you’re chatting with can see the image.
* The sender already knows what the image looks like (i.e. why do I want to see again, enlarged on my screen?)
* The not-downloaded, downloading, and downloaded (gray, semi-gray, and colored respectfully) progress indicator is too subtle for Mom and Dad users.
* The feature engulfs the entire window, making image-related chat impossible.

Show Your Location on Google Talk and Gmail Chat

Google Latitude is a service that lets you see where your friends are on a map in real time. Now there is a new feature that allows you to automatically share your location with your Google Talk buddies.

You can opt in to have your status message automatically display your current city, so that all your Google Talk and Gmail chat contacts can see where you are. If you don't already use Latitude, check it out and then enable Google Talk location status (beta).

You can always disable it by changing or clearing your status message. To turn it back on, just change your status to "loc:on" and it will resume displaying your current city within 30 seconds.
