There are many plugins and patchs which allows you remove ads from Windows Live Messenger completely. If you don't want to install any of these plugins there is an easy way to block all ads served on WLM.
Follow these steps :
- Click Start button on Windows
- Go to Control Panel –> Internet Options
- Click on the security tab and click on ’Sites’ under restricted sites.
- Add the url “rad.msn.com” and those ads will never be shown again.
rad.msn.com is msn's ad server. Blocking access to this site will block all ads from the msn websites and most of the other sites that they own.
Please note that this method don't remove ads completely. You'll see a white blank space instead of ads. Sometimes it is a video, but you can block that using the same method.

If you don't want to install any ad-blocker program you can try this
http://www.imessengr.com/2008/05/how-to-manually-block-ads-on-windows.html
It works for me.
wow thank you
Thanks!
I loled when you are actually using Microsoft's product to block Microsoft.
thanks..
this is so ingenious!!!
Effing brilliant. Nice one. No more stupid ads that eat 99% CPU.
does not work for me, windows live will not load it says I must enable cookies. help?
Thanks
Worked at first, but afterwards ads came back.
easier to add it to hosts file : C/windows/system 32/drivers/etc/hosts - open in notepad and add "127.0.0.1 rad.msn.com" - no quotes- works for yahoo as well - add "127.0.0.1 insider.msg.yahoo.com" - no quotes- leaves blank space or logo only - acceptable for me
this is sweet, but do you know how to block the link ad in the chat window?
Worked okay for me so far. banned the ad url, then rebooted msn for it to take effect, so far, no ads. Thanks for sharing. =)

thanx I hate when the ads chew up the bandwidth in the background without me noticing. :)
