Flick IM - Web-based Messenger for MSN, WLM, ICQ, Yahoo, Jabber anf Google Tallk

Flick IM was launched as an AIM client for iPhone. It's back with a web chat client for AIM, MSN, Google Talk, ICQ, Yahoo and Jabber.

As Techcrunch reported new Flick IM allows you add applications similar to Facebook:

"FlickIM is letting applications integrate right into chat messages or as widgets along a sidebar. For instance, a Yelp widget will let users search for restaurants and send the reviews to friends through a chat message. Similar to Facebook, users will be able to add and remove the applications and notify their friends about what apps they have installed.
...
For now Flick.IM has launched with a handful applications, but will soon let developers add their own widgets and services to the platform through an API released in the next two to three weeks.."

25th Anniversary of "Smiley Face" Emoticon

Twenty-five years ago, three keystrokes -- a colon followed by a hyphen and a parenthesis -- were first used as a horizontal "smiley face" in a computer message by Carnegie Mellon University professor Scott E. Fahlman, the university said.

To mark the anniversary Wednesday, Fahlman and his colleagues are starting an annual student contest for innovation in technology-assisted, person-to-person communication. The Smiley Award, sponsored by Yahoo Inc., carries a $500 cash prize.

Discovr is a new hack for Yahoo Messenger, which let users users to find new friends on Yahoo! Messenger by seeing who their IM contacts have on their list. It's a prototype and has not been published yet:

"At a recent Hack Day, a team of four Yahoos built and presented “Discovr”, a hack that would enable users to find new friends on Yahoo! Messenger by seeing who their IM contacts have on their list. A “friends of friends” concept. Discovr was created by Yahoos Ashwinder Ahluwalia, Vinay Kakade, Pras Sarkar and Ramana Yerneni.

They showed me a web-based prototype of this “friend-finder”. Here’s how it worked: After typing in my Yahoo! ID, I saw a list of other Yahoo! IDs that appear on my IM friends’ friends list. Sort of like peeking into my friend’s contact lists, except that I don’t know which friend belongs to whom; it’s just an aggregate look at the universe of my friends’ contacts. There was also relevancy rankings so I could get a feel for which of these new potential friends is the most connected in my IM community. If a Yahoo! "Like most people, I thought I’d seen everything in terms of phishing scams. Paypal and bank phishing emails are a regular occurrence in most people’s inboxes. Then I received this:



Why in the world would a scammer want my Skype details? I have about $12 AUD in credit, which I suppose could be used to make calls, but it hardly seems worth the effort.

Notably, Gmail did not pick the email up as being a scam.

I checked the html for the email: the alleged skype link goes to a page on cec-icmc.org that is set up to look just like a page from Skype..."
