Skype API Plugin allows you chat with your Skype buddies inside Pidgin.

It requires Skype to be running as it uses the Skype API to communicate with a running copy of Skype.

Skype API Plugin currently works with Windows, Linux and OS X.

Wow, that's what I call useful. And it's so obvious that one might actually come up with the question "Why did they go through all the hassle and 'parallel-develop' all the IM protocols, when they could have just as well talked through the original programs/APIs, but require you to have all the programs running at all times?"

The point of pidgin is to have one IM program for all accounts, whether it be gtalk or msn or whatever. So is this not a bit pointless if you have to have the skype program open anyway?

It's not pointless. If you use this plugin you don't have to switch between two clients. You just have to open Skype and let it run on taskbar.

Yeah, great, and then get gazillion pop-ups and notifications for everything thats going on. Id rather leave my original messenger's settings untouched as they are now, and use this all-in-one messenger to have organisation. Also, this saves many resources, as I dont have x programs open, but just one light-weight one :)

Pointless plug In. If I have to have Skype runnning I can use my contatcs from there. Since Skype seems to make it intentionally difficult to work with them, I have started to inform my contacts I am not using it anymore. Pity since I had a balance on skype.

After installing this I realize there is no point to it if I have to keep Skype open.. this is useless!! -___-

    Absolutely useless plugin.

Why are you all complaining? If you don't like it, don't use it. I think it's great! The skype UI blows, and it's wonderful to finally be able to chat with skype contacts without having half my screen real estate taken up by the crappy interface. Plus now I can set notifications for when my friends come online, because skype lacks that functionality.

Ignore the rabble....Double thumbs-up for this plug-in. Thanks for developing.

I want to keep Skype open to make/receive phone calls anyway, but only want one interface for all the IMs my different work/home/legacy communities use (Sametime, Gtalk, Y!, Skype, MSN).

    Great plugin,

As with many things in life a compromise has had to be made in keeping Skype open but as one of the posters said Skype is often used for calls anyway. Good piece of work, easy to setup. We all have the choice to no longer use Skype, it simply needs us to take the plunge and sign up for one of the more open IM standards. If people won't follow then they probably don't want to chat with you anyway!

I don't really see the point of this.

I would like to thank author for sharing it with us and as it was said if you dont like it dont use it.
But I have to agree that I do not see any point in using since I need open skype.

    the same problem... :(

  17. Anonymous // 15 September, 2008 17:05

    Pointless??
OK. Now to have a single contact list and all logs in one single program is pointless...
    haha.
    Great Plugin.

Can I open different Skype accounts in Pidgin on one running Skype?

  21. SBartsch // 19 October, 2008 13:53

Hi, great plugin! I hope Skype will open its protocol, but i don't think they will do... i'm a not-want-but-must user of this sh** :(

    PS: please use jabber !

  22. Anonymous // 06 January, 2009 08:51

whats the point if you need to have Skype open. Pidgin would suck if you needed to have MSN, YAhoo, etc open to use it .

    Stupid.
