Google Talk and Lotus Sametime Integration

IBM announced that IBM Lotus Sametime instant messaging customers can now communicate with users of AIM and the Google Talk instant messaging service:

2. Type Google into address field
3. Search for emessenger
4. Select emessenger mobile from Google
5. Select MSN Mobile (or AIM/Yahoo)
6. Enter your sign-in details
7. Thats it!

One point to note - you may have to refresh conversations to see the replies as it doesn't automatically do it (use the emessenger refresh button - not the Wii browser one)."

Gtalk features in 2007: Google Talk Phone Calls, Offline Google Docs

Google launched many applications in the last 2 years, but most of them had too few features (Google Talk) or they were under-promoted (Google Docs & Spreadsheets).

"In 2007, things will change. David Girouard, VP and General Manager at Google Enterprise, told Internetnews.com that Google Talk will include many new features and will become a true VoIP client. "Girouard said that Google Talk, which currently allows users to make VoIP calls among themselves, will be beefed up to integrate with traditional phone systems as well as VoIP offerings from other vendors."

Feed behavior in New Blogger

Blogger moved to Atom 1.0 as a feed format. (Old Blogger blogs used Atom 0.3.) One of the new features of Atom 1.0 is an element which identifies the date/time at which a post was updated; this adds to the element, which identifies when a post was initially published.

Here's the trick: New Blogger now sorts your Atom 1.0 source feed by updated date, not by published date. So, if you decide to update an old post from months ago, it will suddenly leap to the top of your feed as the newest item, re-exposing your subscriber base to this old content (and whatever update you have since provided).

iGo Incognito - private instant messaging

iGo Incognito is an Instant Messaging (IM) system similar to ICQ, AOL and others in that you can see whether people are online, send messages, have private chats and join discussion forums.

However, this is where the similarity ends - because iGo Incognito provides several important unique facilities - the foremost amongst them being Security/Safety/Privacy.

iGo Incognito is the only IM facility built from the ground up on cryptographically strong security. No other IM product can provide end-to-end security - i.e. messages are encrypted at your machine and decrypted at your friends machine and cannot be decrypted in the middle.

Most IM products either don't encrypt traffic, or if they do they encrypt it is only for transmission to the server where it is decrypted. That still means that your messages can be read at the server. Furthermore, with some products they can be read on your machine because they are stored in clear text.

iGo Incognito encrypts messages using public key technology. Messages cannot be decrypted during transmission, they cannot be decrypted at the server, they can only be decrypted by the recipient. No one can intercept or view them - just the recipient.

This remarkable claim also applies to private chats - only people actually invited to a private chat can join, and only after joining can they see any of the messages.

The reason why widescreen is better

Most movies are up to 2.35 times wide as they are high resulting in a panaromic frame. However most TVs are only 1.33 times as wide as they are high. To accomodate this difference, many movies have sides cut of, resulting in a loss of %46 of the visuals.



This is done by a process called "pan and scan" which puts the focus on one section of the frame. The widescreen or "letterbox" process reduces the size of the visuals so that entire frame fits within the screen, preserving the movie as the filmakers intended it to be seen.



This result in what are inaccurately referred to as "black bars". They are in reality nothing more than unused areas of the screen, although they are often used for subtitles. Even with the black areas, when you watch a widescreen movie, you are actually seeing more of the movie, not less.

How does it work?

In the Medieval period, artists and scribes often used a metal stylus in order to draw on a specially prepared paper surface. "Do you do a lot of instant messaging? I have started to do more now that Google Talk is built into Gmail. The beauty of that is that I don't have to install a client and it is available anywhere I have a browser. If I want one of the other services then I need to install their client or something like Trillian that logs me into everything at the same time. Still a bit of a drag because I have to log in and have things running in the back ground. The browser is with me everywhere.

Soapbox and MSN Messenger Integration

On 19 December MSN just launched a feature. Instead of just IM'ing your contact a link to a video, you are allowed to actually watch a video with friends, using Windows Live Messenger in real-time.

This is how it works:

If at any time you would like to watch a video with one of your Messenger contacts, just click on the "share" tab under a Soapbox Video and select "IM this video.



If you are already signed into Messenger, this will prompt you to choose which contact you would like to watch the video with.
If you are not signed in, you will be prompted to do so.

Choose the contact, and once the person has accepted your invitation - boom the Messenger Activity Window will launch, with the player in full view. You can now watch the video with your friends and chat about it, all at the same time.

I want to share a great post with you. I'm sure all of you are getting lots of spam emails daily. One of the main reasons is that we share our emails on many blogs and forums. Here is the way to finding out who gives away your Gmail address:

"When you give your email address to a website, you hope that they don't sell or trade your address to a bunch of spammers. Well if they do, here is a simple way to see what sites are responsible for what particular piece of email. This requires you have a Gmail account.

If your Gmail login name was username@gmail.com and you went to samplesite.com to fill out a registration form, instead of just entering username@gmail.com as your email, enter it as username+samplesitecom@gmail.com instead. When Gmail sees a "+" in an email address, it uses all the characters to the left of the plus sign to know who to send it to. In this example it would still send it to username@gmail.com.

Now whats cool is if you search Gmail for username+samplesitecom, you will see all massages that were sent to that email address.

To see who is responsible for sending a specific message click the Show Details link and you will see the complete address."

Video Chat Widget for Bloggers - Wengo Visio

Wengo, a subsidiary of 9 Telecom, France’s second largest telecom, has a well designed chat widget for bloggers. It’s called Wengo Visio and is like MeeboMe but with video chat. Visio runs in Flash through a bit of embedded JavaScript and CSS, with SIP as the communications protocol.

When you have your widget installed, you can make yourself available to chat by logging in through an admin menu. While online, readers can solicit you for chatting by typing a little message in text box that shows up on the owners side. The owner can then initiate the chat if they choose. Chatting is currently one-to-one via mic and optional web cam, which makes it less overwhelming than the flood of texting that can happen with MeeboMe. Although, the group video chat of PalTalk and ability for readers to listen in could make for an ad hoc “Gillmor Gang” style meeting of the minds right on your blog.

Skype Founders to Launch Streaming TV Service

Skype founders Janus Friis and Niklas Zennström have begun a limited beta test of a new, streaming broadband television service. Codenamed 'The Venice Project,' the service promises "near high-definition" television supported by advertising.
Like Skype, this service would also rely on peer-to-peer technology instead of central servers. Similar to torrents, the more people viewing a program, the fast you will be able to stream it on your PC.

Funding for the venture comes in part from the proceeds of the $2.6 billion dollar sale of Skype to eBay last year.

The Venice Project will not compete directly with Google's YouTube, but instead offer conventional, advertising-supported television programming and eventually pay-per-view options.

With more networks publishing television programming online, this market is getting more crowded all the time. But there still is no clear winner in the market. Friis and Zennström are banking on this opportunity to grab the market lead before anyone else steps in.

Worm Spreading via Skype Chat?

Computer security analysts are studying reports of a worm that may be circulating via a feature in Skype's popular Voice over IP service.

Security vendor Websense said the worm spreads through Skype's chat feature. Users receive a message asking them to download a file called "sp.exe." The executable is a Trojan horse that can steal passwords. If a user runs the Trojan it triggers another set of code to spread itself.

The first infected PCs appeared in the Asia-Pacific region, particularly in Korea, Websense reported on its blog today. It said it was still investigating the issue.

Not all security experts were in agreement, however. F-Secure received a sample of the worm and determined that it did not, in fact, target Skype, said Mikko Hypponen, chief research officer. "What's clear is, there's no massive worm outbreak with Skype at the moment," Hypponen said. "We are following the situation."

The SANS Internet Storm Center said it was "hearing some details of a new worm spreading via Skype IM" and asked for more information in a posting on its site.

Websense said the executable appears to be encrypted with NTKrnl Secure Suite Packer, a polymorphic encryption program that makes files look unique to different detection engines. The original site that hosted the code is no longer serving it, Websense said.

I've found a great service and I think it's useful for bloggers:

FeedShake is a free service for merging, sorting and filtering multiple XML feeds. (Atom, RSS, Podcasts). Each time you request your feed from Feedshake's server, subfeeds are parsed, filtered and merged into a unique RSS 2.0 feeds. If you want to show multiple feed links on your blog, you can shake them on Feedshake and use an unique feed URL to show topics from different blogs and websites.

Ramani from Hackosphere already reviewed this service on 08/12/06. Blogger Beta's Layout manager still doesn't accept this newly generated feed URL. Ramani had to used RSS-to-Javascript.com to display feed links.

Can different IM programs share the same webcam?

I want to share a topic about this problem posted on BigBlueBall forums:

I use Yahoo Messenger as well as MSN Messenger. Also AOL IM, but not as much. Anyway, my question is does anyone know if these programs can share the same webcam, or does one program "own" it once you start using it? So if I already have a webcam on with Yahoo IM, and if I am signed in to MSN Messenger, can those users also view my webcam?

Thanks for that link. However what I am trying to determine is if this works already. If I have yahoo IM and MSN running together, and using a webcam on one, would the other users be able to see the image also? Not necessarily join in the same chat, but have access to the images.

The answer is no. If you use the cam with someone on MSN Messenger, and you try and turn it on in Yahoo Messenger, it will tell you it is not connected.

If you turn it on in Yahoo Messenger and try and use it in MSN Messenger, it will tell you that "your conversation cannot begin because your camera is currently in use or not plugged in. Make sure your camera is available and try again."

SkypeOut calls will no longer be free

Beginning in 2007, SkypeOut calls will no longer be free. The company announced on Wednesday that they would start to charge a yearly fee to call from Skype to any mobile or land-line phone. Calls from PC to PC will remain free.
Unlimited yearly calling will cost $29.95. If you purchase the plan before January 31, 2007, it will only cost $14.95. Without an unlimited plan, users can pay 2.1 cents per minute to calls within the U.S. and Canada, which is the same as the rate for international calls.
“We see a willingness by consumers to make SkypeOut calls that are well priced,” Don Albert, Skype’s general manager for North America, told The New York Times.

How to remove / uninstall SweetIM

How do I uninstall SweetIM?
To uninstall SweetIM and remove it from your computer go to your Windows control panel and click on Add/Remove programs. Select Macrogaming ltd (the company that builds SweetIM) and click on remove program. This will effectively remove SweetIM from your computer.

How do I uninstall SweetIM for IE?
You can minimize the SweetIM for IE toolbar by clicking the right button when placing the cursor on the toolbar, and then selecting SweetIM for Internet Explorer. If you still want to uninstall SweetIM for IE and remove it from your computer go to your Windows control panel and click on Add/Remove programs. Select SweetIM for Internet Explorer and click on remove program. This will effectively remove SweetIM for IE from your computer.

I'm having trouble uninstalling the Toolbar.
Windows 2000 or XP users must be logged in as an administrator to uninstall SweetIM for IE. After logging in, Select to remove "SweetIM for Internet Explorer" from the "Add/Remove Programs" window, in the "Control Panel". If you are unsuccessful, please try installing the Toolbar again and then uninstalling.

From what we can tell, SweetIM is NOT spyware. We think it is a false positive from ZoneAlarm. However, all indications are that SweetIM is a pretty useless program to have, anyway.

The purpose of SweetIM is for you to be able to send fancier smiley-faces and IM graphics to friends who are using MSN Messenger. BUT - they are only able to see these advanced smiley-faces if they also have SweetIM installed.

Our advice: uninstall the program, unless you really really love the features that SweetIM provides, and your buddies have SweetIM installed, too. It is better to err on the side of caution in this instance.
