Louis, it definetly increases your earning. There are many threats about this trick on SEO forums. One of the most important thing is the ad link color. Default blue link is more clickable then others, because visitors hardly differentiate the ads from other links.
Here is the I've used for the 336x280 ad. Please note that you should change "width" and "height" values to put your own image on the same line with ad links.
